Earlier this month, after anti-Israel graffiti was found on a Maine college campus, an upset, anonymous party contacted college administrators, calling the incident a hate crime. But the state attorney general s office, after completing its review, decided late last week that the incident didn t qualify as a hate crime.
The graffiti was found on May 9 at Bates College, a liberal arts college in Lewiston, Maine. The graffiti, which was reportedly done with chalk, consisted of phrases such as Stop ethnic cleansing, Free Palestine and Israel is killing innocent people, according to pictures in a student organization s Instagram post.

(May 13, 2021 / JNS) Anti-Israel graffiti discovered at Bates College in Maine on Sunday has been referred to the attorney general’s office to be investigated as a possible hate crime.
The Instagram account of the school’s Bates Leftist Coalition shared photos of chalk graffiti on campus that targeted the Jewish state. The graffiti read “Stop ethnic cleansing,” “Israel is killing innocent people,” “Free Palestine,” and “F ZIONIST ISRAEL.”

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) – Police have referred an investigation into graffiti on the campus of Bates College that targeted Israel and supported Palestinian rights to the state Attorney General’s Office as a possible hate crime.
A social media account affiliated with some Bates College students posted photos on Sunday showing what appeared to be chalk graffiti on the college’s campus that supported Palestinian rights and targeted Israel, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported.
The Lewiston Police Department informed the attorney general’s office about the slogans for a possible investigation as a hate crime, the newspaper reported.

LEWISTON Bates College was hit Sunday with some anti-Israel graffiti and flyers that some saw as a potential hate crime.
Gwen Lexow, Bates’s director of Title IX and civil rights compliance, told students in a Monday email that college officials had heard from a number of people “expressing deep concern about the impact of the language contained in the flyers and graffiti, particularly on Jewish members of our campus community.”
The college contacted police, Lexow said, and its facility services members are “working to remove the graffiti.”
The Lewiston Police Department was called to the scene, though its officials said later in the day they knew nothing about it, and informed the state Attorney General’s Office about it as a possible hate crime.
