How Drop the Dead Donkey broke the news – and its cast
The comedy almost known as Dead Belgians Don’t Count was a unique mix of office humour and topical jokes. But staying current came at a cost

When Drop the Dead Donkey became a comedy hit for Channel 4, some hacks claimed the title as a well-worn journalistic phrase. It was in fact made up by creators and writers Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, inspired by a gloriously cynical snippet overheard in the BBC newsroom.
Shadowing the newsroom as research for their new script, they observed the editorial team putting together the evening bulletin – an increasingly furious process of shifting news items around, and bumping them up and down the running order.

Year-long contract to work on radio shows
BBC Studios has taken on two new staff writers for comedy.
Tasha Dhanraj and Rajiv Karia will work across Radio 4 topical shows, panel games and podcasts including The Now Show, The News Quiz, Dead Ringers and Newsjack.
They are being employed on a year-long contract, under a scheme to give experience to up-and coming writers, which stemmed from the BBC’s radio comedy writer bursary. Writers who have taken part in that scheme since its 1978 inception have included Guy Jenkin (Outnumbered), Rob Grant and Doug Naylor (Red Dwarf) and Simon Blackwell and Georgia Pritchett (The Thick of It, Veep).
