Sen. Bill Stanley and yours truly will never be members of a mutual-admiration society. On occasion Iâve criticized the Franklin County Republican. On others, Iâve poked fun at him.
Many years ago, I bestowed Stanley with a Dano Award for glaring public stupidity, in the category âBest Gun Threat by an Elected Official.â That was after he warned a colleague of mine about prying into where he lived â lest the reporter get âa face full of my Glockâ or something like that.
This year, Stanley has made some waves in Richmond with his full-throated support of abolishing Virginiaâs death penalty. Heâs the only Republican senator whoâs dared to stick his neck out on that issue.
