Border officials nabbed the suspect in a southern New Mexico homicide as he tried to cross the border from Mexico Wednesday evening. U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Roger Maier said an officer recognized Jesus Jose Lopez, 35, at the Columbus port of entry. He said Lopez had no identifying documents and was taken into custody without incident. Lopez is charged with an open count of murder in the April 9 death of 39-year-old Gustavo Tijerina in Columbus. “The vigilance and attention to detail demonstrated by the CBP officer prevented this person from gaining entry,” CBP Columbus Port Director Tony Hall said in a statement.

Luna County Sheriff s Office makes arrest in Columbus shooting death Suspect faces open count of murder DEMING – An arrest has been made in the shooting death of Gustavo Tijerina, age 39, of Columbus, NM. Tijerina was shot on Friday, April 9th in the Columbus near the village chamber of commerce building at 205 S. Main Street. Tijerina suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on Sunday, April 11, at University Medical Center in El Paso. Jesus Jose Lopez, age 35, was taken into custody at the port of entry south of Columbus by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials shortly after 5 p.m. on Wednesday while he tried to enter the United States from Mexico. CBP officers recognized Lopez as the suspect from information provided by the LCSO in connection with the shooting.

Eighth St. Failure to appear on charges of criminal sexual penetration of a minor (under 13); a 1st degree felony, criminal sexual contact of a minor (2nd degree felony) and abuse of a child in Roosevelt County District Court. Drug possession: Robert Stephen Medicus, 21, 2000 block of Perrin Road NW. Possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine). Also, possession of drug paraphernalia and a Grant County Magistrate Court warrant for failure to appear.
