The Daily Dispatch has put out its annual call for preloved literacy, collecting anything from fiction to children’s stories, to be donated to relevant 2023 Local Hero winners on World Read Aloud Day in February 2024.
For more than 17 years, a ray of hope has shone over the lives of the less fortunate residents of Garcia Flats, in Cambridge, thanks to a humanitarian who lives among them. When Kennitta Community Projects founder Kennitta Prinsloo, 62, started her charity programme, she was simply feeding into her compulsion to help those less fortunate than her.
This year the Local Hero gala event was a night of rose gold glamour in honour of 12 winners whose work helping their communities stood out from more than 50 nominees. In the first in-person event since 2019, the Daily Dispatch and Johnson & Johnson Local Heroes awarded the selected finalists with R20,000 and a professionally shot video of their projects.
