new york. well, right now, we are waiting for official word on whether bp has started a series of key tests on the new containment cap placed on its gushing well in the gulf of mexico. those tests are designed to tell if bp can completely stop the gushing oil as it hopes. we have got live pictures to show you, as the oil is pouring out. it s now day 85 of the disaster in the gulf. if this cap is to work, it s just a temporary fix while they drill those two much talked about relief wells. the first should be completeded by the end of july. let s get more on that cap. ma mara, earlier today, admiral thad allen said let s not get caught up in hours and time, but originally we were told between six and 48 hours we would know whether this cap was an effective solution.

it looks like it will get worse so it can get better. admiral thad allen signed off on a plan by the b.p. enger noose to remove the containment cap that is catching half the gushing oil and replace it with a cap that could theoretically get it all by monday. however, for a couple of days the well will be allowed to gush unabated. jonathan serrie is following the developments and joins us from grand isle. reporter: thad allen, national incident commander, said he signed off on the b.p. plan because of the long-term potential to capture much more oil than the current system is capable of doing. the new cap is designed to provide a tighter fit over the imperfect and jagged cut in the well pipe. if the installation goes as planned, it could potentially capture all of the oil that is spewing from the wellhead and funnel that oil to ships on the surface.
