The festivities kicked off around noon with a presentation of the flag by Lakewood High School's color guard, followed by the Star-Spangled Banner, an air show and plenty of '80s rock.
Councilmember Roberto Uranga appears to have won a third term representing the 7th District on the City Council, and incumbent Downtown Councilmember Mary Zendejas has holds a slim margin that could see her reelected, according to early election results released Tuesday night.
Several new candidates filed their intention to run for Long Beach City Council, LBUSD Board of Education and State Assembly this week. There are now nearly 30 candidates filed for city races.
“I’m glad he was able to watch the ceremony last week and hear stories about what he meant to so many people,” said current 9th District Councilman Rex Richardson.
