谢关成14岁那年，新中国成立了，小小年纪的他立志要为国家尽一份力。在解放舟山群岛的战疫中，谢关成三兄弟主动响应号召，用自家帆船运送解放军战士去前线。他们一路随船同解放军战士同吃同睡，听到了许多让他们心潮澎湃的战斗故事，临走，一名解放军送了谢关成一枚渡江战役勋章，这次经历在无形中改变了谢关成的人生轨迹，而那枚勋章，至今还被谢关成保存着，成了他的宝贝。
1951年，刚满16周岁的谢关成毅然报名参军，他的目标是前往朝鲜战场，抗美援朝。然而，最终谢关成还是没能去前线。当时同他一样报名参军的年轻人很多，他们从新登徒步到余杭集训，两个月后，被分成一个个小组，一部分后来去了朝鲜战场。谢关成不在其中，他被分配去了当时的南京空军军法处。
