shooter, miguel. reporter: we are indeed. we have spoken to several people who know robert bowers and know him well. what is most terrifying about this situation, wolf, is that this is a man who barely cast a shadow in this life and now he is charged with the biggest attack and murder of jews in u.s. history. robert bowers in court, cuffed and in a wheelchair, officially charged, 29 counts in all from murder to obstructing the free exercise of religious beliefs, a hate crime. the government may seek the death penalty. it was an attack on all people of faith. it cannot and will not be tolerated. he ll be subjected to the death penalty perhaps. reporter: investigators digging deeply, searching bowers home, sending in a bomb robot first to ensure there were no explosive traps. they ve searched his vehicle and are looking for closed circuit video that might have captured bowers prior to the massacre, and doing a painstaking

investigation of the crime scene itself. this is a large, complex crime scene, and much work remains to be seen. reporter: bowers had 21 guns registered to him. he took four into the synagogue, three glock handguns and an ar-15 assault-style semi-automatic rifle. the glocks he purchased legally. it is not clear how he obtained the ar-15. investigators also recovered a shotgun from bowers car. we continue to conduct interviews, scrub social media, review possible surveillance camera video and exploit digital media to determine how and why bowers committed this terrible act. reporter: bowers social media reads like a roadmap of hate and murder. he was particularly concerned about the caravan of central american migrants and appeared to key on reporting from fox news , right wing social media, and highlighted by president trump s own tweets that middle easterners may be mixed in with the migrants, all claims without evidence. bowers reposted this
standing by. let s begin with brian todd and the investigation into the mass murder at the pittsburgh synagogue. brian, what is the latest? reporter: wolf, we have new information tonight on the alleged shooter s social media rants in the days and even in the minutes leading up to the massacre. and we ve learned that federal prosecutors have initiated the process to seek the death penalty for the suspect who made his first appearance in court today. entering court in a wheelchair, wearing a blue shirt, handcuffed, the accused synagogue shooter, robert bowers, who was shot by police, but is now out of the hospital, appeared before a federal judge in pittsburgh. tonight, he s behind bars. prosecutors say bowers is a flight risk and danger to the community. we will have the opportunity to present evidence, demonstrating that robert bowers murdered 11 people who were exercising their religious beliefs, and that he shot or injured six others, including four of whom were police officers
