seven people are dead at this house of worship. it s a temple used by the sikh community in the city of oak creek, wisconsin. six of them were shot dead by a gunman who opened fire during a religious service inside. the gunman is also dead, according to police, shot by a responding police officer. that police officer was wounded. two other people are also wounded. police in oak creek talked to reporters a few minutes ago. they didn t add much more information except to say that they were treating the shooting as a, domestic terrorist type incident. they are also confident the gunman was operating alone. police don t plan to release more official information until tomorrow morning. here is what oak creek police had to say a few minutes ago. what we had happen today was an individual. our officers responded to a 911 call. because of the heroic actions of our officers they stopped it being worse than it could have been. our officers responded to the scene, did find a victim
injured people pretty much from me all the way up to the safeway, stretched out all the over the ground. the gunman didn t hesitate to continue firing rapidly. he was just standing there, just shooting one right after the other and i thought he shot about 18 to 20 times. but i knew i was next because he was shooting like this and i was standing right at the end of the line. and so everybody was hitting the ground including me. and so i turned to my left and went to go down. and i lowered my head about six inches and i felt this burning sensation in the back of my head. a burning sensation and a stinging sensation and i went right on to the ground. when the congresswoman was on the floor in her original position, she was in some danger of asphyxiation from swallowing her own blood.
i proceeded around to the side of the table around a concrete post and looked up just as she was being shot. it must have been obviously shocking, but did it take a minute to register what was going on? it took a couple seconds to register. there s a certain unreality to it. i initially thought is this a stunt of some sort, you know, to scare people? but the gunman didn t hesitate to continue firing rapidly. i think 15 to 20 rounds. reporter: joe, you were with your mom inside a bakery. you said when you heard those shots, you knew what it was. this is not a car backfiring. no. i mean for a split second i thought maybe fireworks, but it was too distinct. if you heard a gun, you know a gun, and that s a gun. reporter: you ran toward the scene. i was inside walgreens there. i carry a gun and i went outside to see if i could help somebody.
