(Mainichi/Naomichi Senoo) OTA, Gunma Four elementary school students in the east Japan prefecture of Gunma were presented with Citizen of the Year awards in January for collecting money through crowdfunding to support Rohingya people, a Muslim ethnic minority group from Myanmar who have been sheltering in refugee camps in Bangladesh. The prize was given out by Citizen Watch Co. to people who had a positive impact on society. The schoolchildren collected more than 3 million yen (about $27,000) between August and October last year and have been donating the funds since December.
