some people are. so they would say this is a small part of it. bottom line, what he is proposing here politically is not radical. most republicans support most of these measures, the request he is will lawmakers? the question is how much traction will any of these proposals actually be able to get in congress? tom foreman, thank you so much. the president s speech coming on a night when fellow democrats sparred with republicans in a contentious house committee hearing. they produced a string of gun proposals that have little to no chance getting past republicans in the senate. cnn s lauren fox is live on capitol hill with more on this. lauren, what can you tell us? reporter: well, this hearing yesterday really revealing just how deep the skiz i ms are between republicans and democrats when it going to what they think needs to be done to stop gun violence across the country. the judiciary committee will please come to order
children. is this time going to be different, that is the question everybody wants to know. joining us now is senator richard blumenthal, democrat from connecticut, and one of the leaders of a bipartisan group of senators discussing gun reform legislation. senator blumenthal, it s great to see you, again thank you so much for making time for us this evening. you have said, sir, that you are more hopeful than you have been since sandy hook about the prospect of real action on guns, right now. as one of the senators involved in this process, talk to me about the bipartisan gun proposals that are in front of, you and in front of your colleagues. why are you more optimistic now? why is there now any reason to believe that republicans are negotiating in good faith on gun reform? i am more hopeful, thank you for having me. but we need to be very clear eyed about the history, here i ve been working on this issue
it. that s why i m willing to look at things that might be less than what i would like. there is no gun control proposal, no change that s going to pass the senate at least on the table today. they wouldn t even raise the age from 28 to 21 18 18 to 21. no gun proposals. maybe providing incentives for states to strengthen red flag laws. what the senate is talking about is really around the edges. nothing directly as you mentioned that would impact the ability to purchase guns, what age to purchase guns. and so that still is very limited, and senator murphy has been clear about this. he says i know that what we are going to do is not going to solve every problem or every potential mass shooting that happens in the future, but we need to show the american public that we are willing to try something and just to do something and so that people don t think that congress is once again going to turn a blind eye. we ll see how that will fall.

congressman van drew. he has never supported common sense gun proposals. gun control proposals. he also has been on the wrong side of history in lgbtq rights, and importantly, though he claims to be pro choice, he, in fact, sponsored in the new jersey state senate some legislation that would have changed our law to make parental notification the law in new jersey. if you could talk to your congressman, congressman van drew yeah. about this impeachment vote tomorrow, what would you tell him? i would tell him to listen to the evidence. he was a person who was out on fox news proclaiming that this was like a third world democracy before all the testimony had been heard. and, i mean, that s a person who has a political motive. it s not someone who is taking his responsibility to the constitution and our country seriously. and shame on him for that. and then to go and trade change parties, i mean, he s a
