demonstrations it asked customers around the country to leave their guns at home when they went on burrito runs. the statement noted while unlicensed open carry of long guns is typically legal in most places a rare sight to see some one saddle up in line for lunch with a 762 point rifle slung across his chest. not only is it rare it s downright weird. open carry texas didn t like that. and responded saying if the nra wouldn t detract their disgusting, disrespectful comments, oct will have no choice but to with dradraw its support of the nra and establish relationships with other gun organizations. what did the nra do? backed down. the lobbyists went on a radio show, nra show, the statement they posted was the view of one staffer expressing a personal opinion. the truth is, an alert went out that referred to this type of behavior as weird. or somehow not normal. and that was a mistake. it shouldn t have happened.
it happens time and time again. i just wonder whether chris christie, mr. i am who i am, is now going to make this tight twisted conversion to presidential candidate that they all seem to try to make. whether he s now scared of extremists in gun organizations. yes. it s clear it s starting and it s a good thing for us to watch because it s going to be step by step we re going to see a lot of it. but as we watch everybody positioning and it s years away. governor christie is going to win re-election in new jersey. he s going to then take over in 2014 i believe it is the republican governors association which is going to be a great platform that is an advance to 2016. but i think the calculations are keeping office in new jersey for now and then the record that will be demonstrated through that second term leading up to 2016. but joe, what if chris christie doesn t have, you know,
year. aggressive schedule, nevada yesterday, alaska, north dakota tomorrow. here was her husband mark kelley speaking to andrea mitchell. what he had to say about 2014 and the election upcoming. if we don t have a congress that can pass some reasonable gun legislation, which i think the public is asking for overwhelmingly in some cases with an extended background check, if congress won t pass that legislation, we ll find some new members. it s also worth noting, mark, giffords and kelly are trying to run the campaign as gun owners, trying to embrace the second amendment as many in that community support gun rights. they say, you re coming after gun rights. they are saying we re part of your community, we just think there has to be in states where gun rights is so big, the problem for nra and other gun organizations is in presidential contests, suburbs in favor of those background
your state. unfortunately in many, many states, the more rural states, some of the gun organizations have made people afraid of any gun legislation as they claim each one will lead to the taking away of your gun. it so happens the background checks would not affect law-abiding gun owners. i believe in the second amendment. i think there is a right to bear arms and i don t think liberals are right when they say it only applies to malicious, and i was saying that before the heller amendment. on the other hand, this bill only affects people who are felons, who are adjudicated mentally ill, who are spousal abusers. if you re a law-abiding gun owner this isn t going to interfere with your rights but some of these gun organizations, the nra in particular, they can t win on the merits of the arguments so they scare people and that s what they ve done here. having said that, if you represent one of these rural states they think if you vouch for this it is going to end up taking away your gun.
today. if the bill passes it makes it a felony if any agent icy or any person works for government tries to use any of the records kept as they are now for a registry and also a 15 year sentence prison sentence. it is not just guys like matt who are addressing the concerns. we have senator lee from utah said the same thing on the senate floor this week. i think before they saw the language of the bill. i heard my friend marco rubio. we are are right across from each other and come in the same class, we are all friends. and we know, i just said please take time and read it. pat toomey and i sat done and went through this. tom coburn has worked with me for months. we talked to gun organizations and tried to get their inputs. we looked at everybody. but the bottom line is we didn t want to leave loopholes in the gun shows or internet sales. this is a criminal and mental background check. it does not infringe on your
