at that point a fight took place at the national rifle association. you had one element focused on shooting sports and they were not interested in politics. you had another element of the nra who is starting to raise the alarm about gun rights. some nra members believed the goal was to abolish firearms in the united states. they realize unless you do something you don t have the right to own a firearm. we see millions of people in america who like to shoot. these new voices in the nra are led by a map named carter. we bereave that the right to keep and bear arms is a part of the america n tradition. carter believed that every gun control measure violated
lot of frustration, polling shows that there is a fair amount of bipartisan support for some amount of gun control measure, no matter what that means, whether that be red flag laws, background checks and there s been gridlock in washington on in issue, going back to manchin toomey, years ago, under the obama administration, post sandy hook, and so there s this big question now, will republicans bring it up. i think the business pressure could provide some additional pressure. what we also know, president trump, while he has kept a close relationship with the nra, loves to be able to say he has done something that barack obama couldn t do. he did criminal justice reform and talks about it all the time. perhaps there s an opening there. we ll see what happens. if he calculates the nra is going to punish him in the next election. sabrina, what is interesting beyond what companies are doing, it does seem there s bipartisan support for a red flag law. that might be able to cross the thres
strategy for winning reelection in 2020 is a base-centered strategy. is that where a gun control measure like background checks dies? well, jim, it s a good question and the president can say that he s speaking to wayne lapierre all he wants and kind of dressing down about red flag laws. but i think we need to talk about what we re hearing and not hearing from the president and hits allies. what we re hearing the rhetoric about mental health and video games affecting gun violence and we know that s not true. what we re not hearing is a definitive condemnation of gun violence across america. so while his base might be upset that he s kind of dressing down wayne la pierre, i really can t see his base shutting him away and he s not saying we re going to take away your guns. actually i m going to promise you, my base, that you would be able to hold onto your second amendment. molly, in cnn s reporting, the white house is considering the possibility of some executive action by the
and myself to hear the cries of those individuals being notified of the loss of their loved one. listen, i imagine the pain you experienced. finally, because the president s on the ground here now, the president has said in the past i d consider this gun control measure or that gun control measure, then he s backed off. do you again raise the possibility of background checks? do you trust he ll follow through with leadership on this? well, you know, we haven t had any evidence of that so far. these things have been said. he s good at speaking for the moment. and after that moment has passed, no action happens. he can, by virtue of his office, through executive order, make a lot of things happen tonight. in the morning, we can wake up he s used the power of that pen before for a lot of other stuff. we can wake up in the morning to have some legislation, some actions in place to minimize these situations right now. but he s chosen not to do that, just to make noise.
there s only repairing existing wall. he s not managed to get federal money to build a wall through congress. he also stated early on he is avoiding the politics of this debate, that he s already tried to stay away from politic. seconds later he attacked joe biden and you heard him there just before he completed his comments attacking joe biden again. finally if there was a bit of news in here, the president saying he is open to background checks as a new gun control measure following these attacks here. the question is does he follow through on that? we know many republican lawmakers, they privately say they support such a measure, they need the president s leadership. the president after past attacks including parkland has expressed support for gurn control measures and then backed off after meeting with the florida. will this be any different? he s made promises like this before, has not followed through. i want to speak now to a number of folks we have here. first, let me begin wit
