it was a deadly gulf of mexico oil spill which happened around five years ago. the largest corporate settlement of its kind now seen in u.s. history. they previously set aside around $44 billion to cover the criminal and civil penalties. the total pretax charges, though, now standing around $54 billion. the stock rose somewhere in the region of 3% yesterday stateside with investors seemingly relieved that the sum wasn t worse. that the liabilities, they could have been a lot worse than what we saw. and finally, i also want to mention gunmaker stocks. higher with hillary clinton urging tougher gun laws now. you saw the lakes of smith & wesson, ruger for example both rising with comments from ms. clinton leading to concerns that gun restrictions, they could become as yesterday talking about how gun sale loopholes could be closed. wanting to hold sellers more accountable for how the weapons are used. we saw people rushing in to buy these gun stocks ahead of these tougher restrictions.
