miles per hour, likely today, turns into hurricane michael. it s already raining in the keys but this is not a keys event. this is a panhandle event from apalachicola to pensacola, and maybe tallahassee. that would be a lot of wind and knocking down trees in that area here. hurricane hunter just found a wind speed of 66, not a hurricane yet, but later on today, it will get stronger. in very warm water in the gulf of mexico. it s bath water in there still. it s october, but this is some of the warmer air, warmer water around here. 110-mile-per-hour storm by wednesday after midnight tuesday. you see how close and quick this is because the gulf isn t very big. with most of the storms we see them, they re in the middle of the atlantic. we have days and days to prepare. not with this one. this could be a 130-mile-per-hour storm, making landfall there. makes a huge difference. huge whether it hits
lamar alexander and richard burr as well as independent angus king and joe manchin. they offered a permanent fix tieing it to the financial markets. didn t work. what s interesting about. this what steve just outlined might be the conservative principled position. that s not the position of republicans on capitol hill. this is not a big ideological debate in the house. they passed something almost identical to the president s plan although they wanted to fluctuate and he wants to tie it to the 10 year treasury rate. but there is no big ideological debate here. and i think this is a problem that on a policy level could be solved pretty quickly because the gulf isn t that big. bret: where does the fault lie politically when parents go to plan where their kids are going to go. have a hard time figuring out who to blame except everybody. i think it is a disgrace. i do think this will be fixed retroactively before school starts. bret: charles? it s a classic example of the unint
minister with that news. do we have any information how that conversation went? reporter: well, about like you would expect. canadian officials said harper, quote, expressed his profound disappointment with the news and he told the president canada will simply diversify exports looking at china instead. i believe that canada is going to go ahead and do it anyway. if the pipeline down to the gulf isn t built, they will move out west and the oil will go to china. reporter: now the president told harper the rejection was not based on the project s merit and says it isn t in the national interest for now. critics ask what will change other than the route which nebraska already agreed to do? skeptics ask if it isn t in the national have now when and what would make the president decide that it is? jenna. jenna: the opportunity may be gone as canada moves towards the pacific northwest instead of the south. jim, thanks so much. the story we ll continue to
neil: white house officials say president obama s deeply frustrated that the oil leak in the gulf isn t plugged yet. are hearings making matters worse? the senate grilling oil execs over the explosion. tomorrow it s the house s turn, including gene greene of texas. congressman, do you think now is the time to start analyzing this when it s all hands on deck to stop the leak? i would hope we don t have somebody who could plug the well testifying tomorrow and the house of representatives and energy subcommittee. i think we ll hear from the c.e.o.s of all the companies and they re not the ones trying to plug the well. which is what we need. neil: wouldn t you want them closer to the action than no offense to you, but with you? this may be early for the oversight hearings but i don t
clean-up effort. good evening, kris. reporter: good evening to you, bret. mother nature is not cooperating with the massive clean-up effort underway off the coast in louisiana. strong winds and a rising tide are pushing oily water up and over the floating barriers that were set up to protect the shoreline. a thin oil sheen is already washing ashore in areas only accessible by boat. the concern is if the oil flowing into the gulf isn t stopped, it could push in to marshy inlet, ponds and lakes. not just here in louisiana, but all the way over the florida. here is an image of the spill taken from space. nasa satellites clearly show this spill is growing. and the federal government is now pressing b.p., the company that was leasing the sunken rig, to step up efforts to cap the well. we continue to urge b.p. to leverage additional assets, to help lead the response in this effort. because it is clear that after several unsuccessful attempts to secure the source
