Workers hold rally for basic rights, better conditions - Pakistan

KARACHI: A large number of textile and garments factory workers staged a protest rally on Sunday against violation of labour laws in Sindh. The rally, which started from Bilal Chowrangi in Korangi Industrial Area and culminated at the Karachi Press Club, was organised by the National Trade Union Federation (NTUF). The protesting workers threatened to stage a sit-in in front of the Sindh Assembly if the worsening conditions at their workplaces were not improved immediately. Carrying red flags, placards and banners, the protesters marched to make people aware of their grievances in the lead of veteran labour leader Gul Rehman and Textile Garments General Workers Union general secretary Nisar Ahmed Panhwar.

NTUF demands immediate end of growing exploitation of workers Karachi January 21, 2021 The National Trade Union Federation (NTUF) staged a sit-in at Bilal Chowrangi in front of a factory in Korangi Industrial Area Wednesday held against growing exploitation of workers and violation of labour laws. A large number of workers carrying banners and placards attended the protest and raised slogans for their demands. Speakers, including NTUF leaders Nasir Mansoor and Comrade Gul Rehman, and Home-based Women Workers Federation leader Zehra Khan, said industrialists were engaged in brutal economic exploitation of workers. “As per labour laws, it is mandatory to give written appointment letters to workers, but more than 95 per cent of workers are deprived of this legal right,” said Mansoor. “Without appointment letters, these workers cannot avail their legal and constitutional rights and privileges.”

Officials belonging to various agencies working against the menace of smuggling were also present on the occasion along with journalists. The contrabands included narcotics, liquor, gutka, medicines, Chinese salt and betel nuts. Chief guest of the event, Balochistan Chief Customs Collector Gul Rehman praised all the agencies concerned for working tirelessly against smuggling. He extolled the effort of the department for ensuring seizures of smuggled and contraband goods.
