The BJP today scored a landslide victory in Gujarat - the state it has been ruling since 1995. The elections to the 182-member assembly were held in two phases on December 1 and 5.
The Congress will close 2022 with a handful of problems in Gujarat, where it managed to win only 16 seats in the assembly, as the party is likely to lose the post of the Leader of Opposition.
According to the results declared by the Election Commission, the BJP won 156 seats, while the Congress party finished second, winning 17 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that made its debut with a high-decibel campaign won 5 seats
The Congress candidate is trailing by more than 30,000 votes against his nearest rival and Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Malti Kishore Maheswari. When no action was taken, he allegedly tried to commit suicide by tying a piece of cloth around his neck.
