16/03/2021 LICADHO
London, Paris A decision by the International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor concerning allegations of crimes against humanity stemming from the land grabbing frenzy is expected by June this year, FIDH, Global Witness, and Climate Counsel have learned.
In a letter sent today by FIDH, Global Witness, and Climate Counsel to ICC Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, the three organizations expressed their support for pursuing an ICC examination into the situation in Cambodia. The letter has been endorsed by UN Expert bodies, civil society organizations and senior lawyers worldwide. Serious crimes caused by land grabbing have occurred with impunity for more than two decades in Cambodia. The International Criminal Court represents the best channel to deliver justice to the thousands of victims of these crimes.

Women who played a key role in organizing and leading peaceful pro-democracy protests in 2020 in Thailand faced frequent human rights violations aimed at delegitimizing their work and credibility and discouraging them from participating in the demonstrations, says a new report released today by the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders (an FIDH-OMCT partnership).
The report, titled “
Standing tall - Women human rights defenders at the forefront of Thailand’s pro-democracy protests,” is based on interviews conducted with 22 women human rights defenders (WHRD), both youth and adults, who peacefully protected and promoted fundamental human rights and freedoms in connection with the demonstrations.
Sexual and gender-based violence: A glossary from A to Z
Format
Introduction
Sexual and gender-based violence is prevalent globally. It is a weapon used in all wars and in times of unrest and conflict. It is perpetrated, often behind closed doors, in all countries around the world in times of peace. For a long time, however, it has gone unacknowledged and was considered a marginal issue. Because it has not received the attention it so desperately needs, putting an end to it has been a challenge. Crimes and violations of a sexual and gender-based character continue to be under-documented, under-investigated and under-prosecuted. The vast majority of perpetrators benefit from impunity, while victims do not receive redress.
