I drove the trails of California s largest and most mysterious state park - and it was mind-blowing

“Are you really going to do this?” my partner Steve says.
We’re sitting in a Jeep on top of a mesa in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park down near California’s border with Mexico, due west of the Salton Sea. The stark beauty of the cactus-speckled Colorado Desert and its badlands, dry lake beds and erosion-carved peaks spills out for miles in every direction.
Right in front of us is the Diablo Drop-off, a famously steep and uneven precipice that should only be attempted in favorable conditions with a high-clearance vehicle. Soft sands and occasional flash floods mean the drop can vary from mildly amusing to downright treacherous, but luckily for us, today it seems doable.

good morning, everybody, on this friday the 13th. we do begin with that developing story out of new hampshire. five police officers shot. one fatally, in a drug bust gone horribly wrong. it s a violent national trend. more and more police officers killed in the line of duty. but for greenland, new hampshire, it is devastating. this morning, police in this small coastal town had the suspect surrounded. the gunman wanted for shooting five police officers during a drug raid, injuring four of them, and killing the local police chief. they entered the home at that time. and they encountered an armed subject. reporter: the shooter opened fire on the officers as they entered the house during a drug bust. a woman also remained in the home early this morning. chief michael maloney was killed leading his men in the raid. he was set to retire later this month. as one town leader put it, it s an unbelievable situation. state leaders have rushed to the hospital, where the injured of
