VFWs see decline in memberships

While many Veterans of Foreign Wars posts have survived the COVID-19 pandemic, they may not survive the next decade.
Membership in the VFW declining as the older generation of foreign combat veterans die off and the many of the younger generation opt not to join.
Bill Strawsburg, commander of the Cambridge VFW, and Benny Ankrom, quartermaster of the Barnesville VFW, both believe that VFWs are an important part of a community because of the services they fund or provide to the community, such as suicide prevention.
Ankrom noted that the Barnesville VFW has eight employees, so that s eight jobs for the community and the post donates approximately 45,000 to $50,000 a year to charities even though the VFW s main purpose is to help veterans, widows and orphans.
