Canada invests in its first circular economy focused accelerator and test platform April 20, 2021 Maryam Farag
The Government of Canada announced a non-repayable FedDev Ontario investment of nearly $5 million for the City of Guelph to develop Canada’s first circular economy test platform and accelerator, the Circular Opportunity Innovation Launchpad (COIL).
Through this project, the City of Guelph, in partnership with 10C Social Entrepreneurship Hub, Innovation Guelph, the Guelph Chamber of Commerce and the County of Wellington, will accelerate the growth of circular economy-focused companies in the region.
“Circular economy” refers to a system where businesses maximize resources by reusing or repurposing materials, eliminating waste and greenhouse gas emissions in all stages of production. KITCHENER Businesses in Guelph impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic can now apply for funding under the city s economic recovery plan. There is a total of $700,000 available for eligible businesses, organizations and individuals working to address community needs, city officials said in a Wednesday news release. Half of the funding comes from the emergency fund, while the other comes from the tourism recovery fund designed to support local tourism businesses. “We recognize that many not-for-profit organizations, unincorporated groups, and individuals are experiencing ongoing financial impacts due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Danna Evans, general manager of Culture and Recreation, said in the release. “This funding will help local organizations and individuals continue to serve our community with much-needed services and programs.”
