Rafaela “Lali” Garcia – a longtime activist in Kansas City’s Latino community – has died, according to the Guadalupe Centers. She was 93. Her work earned her a number of awards and recognitions over the years, including the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the KC Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and a spot on Ingram’s list of Kansas City’s power elite in 1993 and 1994. The recent issue of FGCU 360 magazine includes a story about Sesame Street in Communities, which offers information for teachers, parents and caregivers to help them discuss with children some of the difficult issues families face.
Locally, WGCU sponsored virtual workshops with the Guadalupe Center, Child Care of Southwest Florida and the Children’s Network of Southwest Florida. As part of the Public Media Champions arm of Sesame Street in Communities, the goal was to reach children from birth to age 6, particularly in rural areas, to help them cope with such modern problems as divorce, food insecurity, parental incarceration and addiction, grief and homelessness.
