The Rajya Sabha has passed the Central Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill, 2023, extending the upper age limit for the GST Appellate tribunal Chairman to 67 years from 65. The bill also allows advocates with 10 years of experience, specializing in indirect taxes, to be eligible for tribunal membership.
Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman says the request to raise the sales threshold for GST registration can be looked into by the GST Council, but most small businesses should ideally be part of the GST chain.
E-commerce platform Meesho on Friday said it has onboarded more than 25,000 non-GST businesses in two months. With an eye on 15-20 million non-GST registered sellers, the SoftBank-backed platform opened up its platform to onboard such businesses on October 1.
The amendment was proposed after the approval of the GST council in its 52nd meeting on October 7. In October the centre had notified the detailed rules for the appointment and service of president and member of the Goods and Services tax (GST) Appellate Tribunal.
NK Singh emphasised the surging pace of urbanisation, projecting that by 2050, half of the population of India will reside in urban areas. He raised concerns about how this would escalate emissions.
