Though he was here only a short time. The Memorial Service for Kevin Sutherland was closed to cameras tonight, but even after it was over, the emotional gravity of that service was plain to see. Sutherlands father traveled from connecticut to eulogize his son crying several times as he tried to get through his brief speech. Kevin had been heavily involved in government here, student government. Friends and colleagues from the school also spoke about what they hoped would be a legacy of service that he might leave behind. Sutherland was the first of two recent au grads to be killed during d. C. s violent summer and several people also spoke to the idea of how the community here might cope and what kevin would have wanted going forward. Its really been probably twice as difficult because weve had for such losses in such a short period of time. But the circumstances of their deaths were different, but i think what they share is that they were at the hands of violence. They were shocking.
