there would be a legal challenge by somebody out there. that is not hard to imagine. what donald trump is saying now is what he said months ago and cnn itself thought that was a logical conclusion. it was ugly racism eight years ago and we shouldn t stand for it in the republican party today. doug, doug, doug, doug, i don t understand why it s ugly racism when it s barack obama and when they did it in 1880 i wasn t alive in 1880. i was opposed to racism then, too. it s not what we need to be talking about. grow jobs, build the economy and do things to get america great again. doug, doug, doug respond, jeff. there is history. 100-year-old history. there is nothing unique to barack obama or ted cruz with this argument. george romney, mitt s father was said by many not to be eligible because he was born in mexico to mormon missionaries. this is a very old argument.
and, again, we don t think that raising tax rates is something that is good for this economy, that will help grow jobs. and so what we have said is there are ways for the federal government to have more revenue if we grow this economy and engage in tax reform, that is the proposal we ve got on the table. let s remember what all this is about. you could put taxes at 100% on the wealthy and not solve the problem of the spending. we have got to get to the problem and stop digging this hole in terms of spending money we don t have. you re running a trillion dollars of deficit every year plus that is the proposals we put on the table to stop that, we re looking at the president to come forward with his ideas on that. bill: not just the president but you re looking at democrats in congress, be it the house or the senate. where are they willing to give when it comes to entitlement reform on medicaid, medicare and possibly even social security? that is yet, bill. that s what we ve got to see
house majority leader eric cantor telling fox news earlier that everyone wants a deal otherwise come january 1st taxes go up for everybody. we don t think that raising tax rates is something that is good for this economy, that will help grow jobs. and so when we have said is there are ways for the federal government to have more revenue if we grow this economy and engage in tax reform, that is the proposal we ve got on the table. jon: the white house today adding more pressure, warning all the uncertainty could hurt consumer confidence, adding yet another dragon an ailing economy. several high profile senators making it clear on the sunday talk shows that taxes remain a key issue. i m willing to generate revenue it s fair to ask my party to put revenue on the table. we are below historic averages. i will not raise tax rates to do it. i will cap deductions. i would be very much opposed to raising tax rates. i do believe we could close
medicare into a voucher program and i also believe the president was good in drawing the contrast between the two economic approaches, the two economic plans. governor romney believes that tax cuts for the wealthy grow jobs. most of us understand that those sorts of tax cuts are what grow deficits. they don t grow jobs. and president obama and his opportunity economy, i thought that exchange was lucid. i don t think it was a game changer tonight. the president handled himself with a more dignified reserve. when governor romney was tested, he got kind of testy. and i thought that the president maintained his cool throughout and did well. what about the president s cool and the president s dignified reserve as you put it, do you think he s going to have to change that style going forward in these debates? i don t believe so. i think that if you could coach him on the next debate, if you could do ten minutes of coaching on the next
promised that i would need in order to get this done. that is a tough bank-shot argument to make. as we see mitt romney continuing to hang in there and even bump up a little bit, starting to get a little mojo the president can t like to have this news on this day. shannon: chris, i hate to interrupt here. let s listen to the president. i believe he s addressing the job concerns now and has talked about for 30 months in a row jobs have been addedment. we need to fill the hole left by this recession faster. we ned to come out of this crisis stronger than when we went in. and there is a lot more that we can do. you know when congress gets back to town next week you need to send them a message, go ahead and give middle class families and small businesses the confidence of knowing that their taxes, your taxes will not go up next year. everybody agrees we shouldn t raise taxes on the middle class, let s go ahead and get that done, let s get it done now. [cheers and applause] shannon: a lit
