that is where investigators believe that plane crashed after the airline ground worker stole the plane. and took it on a more than hour long joyride. if you look at the picture, this is the man who family has identified as the man responsible, 29-year-old richard russell. a ground worker with horizon air which means he loaded and unloaded bags on planes and also help guide aircraft to and from gates. he was with the company for more than three years and one of the coworkers said he could not have imagined russell doing any of this. speaking to a close friend, russell s family who he referred to him as the name of bibo they refer to him as a loving person. they are still grasping with the reality of what happened. he was loved by everyone because he was kind and gentle. to each person he met. this is a complete shock to us. as the voice recordings show, his intent was not to harm anyone. he was right in saying that there are so many people who have loved him.
theft and crash is it also reveals an enormous security issue. we re lucky that only that man at the controls was involved. imagine if this commercial plane had been full of passengers. juliette kayyem. and scott miller a commercial pilot for 30 years. if this ground worker is able to grab a plane and take off how far is a stretch is it for someone with more sinister intentions to do the same thing. there is always going to be a risk in aviation and particularly from what would be known as an insider threat, someone who has gone through security, that the company at least has sort of confidence in. by the time a passenger airline is being filled with people it already has a cockpit staff. it already has the security apparatus surrounding it. in some ways he took advantage of the vulnerabilities because the plane was in fact empty. scott, what crossed your mind

background checks. the fbi tells us he was allowed to be in the security area and they do not believe any security safeguards were compromised. they say would not be out of the norm for a ground worker like this man to be around planes in the secured areas. aviation in america, the doors of the airplanes are not like a car with keys. there is not ignition key like there would be on a car. this set up in aviation is the airfield then we have the mindset is we have employees that are credentialed and authorized to be there to operate. to do their various job responsibilities. reporter: the port authority say they do not understand right now is how this man was not only able to get in the plane and take off but how he was able to fly, move around the air and pull off some of the dangerous stunts as long as he did. he was in the air for more than an hour. eric: a lot of questions about security, the fact that he had access and to get on the tarmac even though he had access and a plan lik
