Racing Minister Grant Robertson is expanding the search for nominations for the TAB NZ Board.
“The process to date has yielded some good candidates, but the selection panel has recommended that I broaden the search and I agree.
“This is a significant decision for the future of racing in this country and I am determined to get it right. While this does mean there will be a delay, I have confidence in the interim Board, and that we will find the best people to guide the future of the TAB.”
Nominations have been received so far from the three racing codes: New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, Harness Racing New Zealand and Greyhound Racing New Zealand.
“Where there are breaches of animal welfare rules, MPI investigates,” said a spokesperson. “The suspension of racing at any track is a question for its operators and the New Zealand Racing Integrity Unit, which have oversight. MPI does not have the legal power to close a track.”

Eight greyhounds have been euthanised in the past month. The five dogs were euthanised between December 18 and January 6 after suffering a variety of sport-induced injuries, which included fractured and dislocated hocks, a fractured hind tarsal bone and a ruptured stomach. One dog was euthanised following gastric dilation and volvulus, which occurs when there is a twisting or knotting of the intestines.
