residents drive through the valley fire, one of several fires forcing thousands to evacuate. that has killed one person and destroyed hundreds of homes. claudia, what is happening where you are? reporter: gretchen, just a scene of total devastation here in middletown, about 35 miles north of napa, where entire neighborhoods are just gone and block after block looks like this one. what had been the garage here continues to smolder and just over here, well, there is just nothing left of what had been somebody s home. but just across the street, gretchen, take a look. that home survived intact, as did many others. but more than 400 homes and businesses were destroyed when the valley fire ripped through this town saturday night, and one person has died, though we don t know the details. reportedly several other people are unaccounted for and four firefighters suffered
third term or president obama and tried to go on offense with donald trump. he says he cherishes women. well, that s nice. but if it s all the same to you, mr. trump, i d rather you stop cherishing us and respecting us instead. clinton was just asked about bernie sanders. she said, he s doing a great job and during debates they ll talk about areas where they agree and disagree. gretchen? so the candidate surging on the democratic side at this stage made a stop at liberty university in the state of virginia today. how was he received there? it was very polite and respectful about bernie sanders trying to find areas of common interest. it was a packed house at liberty university in virginia with sanders speaking about his beliefs including about being pro-choice, a supporter of gay marriage and more. but he also tried to find common ground. let me respectfully suggest that there are other issues out
there that are of enormous consequence to our country and in fact to the entire world that may be, just may be, we do not disagree on. and maybe, just maybe, we can try to work together to resolve. a liberty spokesman said the university made room to allow some sanders supporters into the event. gretchen? thanks so much. i ll be speaking at liberty ten days from now. thank you. meantime, as clinton s poll numbers sink, she recently got some religious advice. you know what it was? apparently to be nicer to the news media. i got some advice from dr. walk aman just earlier this morning. which i promise i will put into effe effect. he basically said, you know, if you re going to read an listen to romans 12, you ve got to be nicer to the press.
no word yet if anyone else was hurt. the campus remains on lockdown as police search for the killer and a spokesman for the mississippi department of safety says the suspect is no longer believed to be on campus. joining me on the phone, rod wheeler, former d.c. homicide detective, for some insights as to what may be going on with the manhu manhunt. now the breaking news is that police do not believe, rod, that this alleged shooter is actually still on the campus. why do you think they believe that? well, there s a couple of reasons, gretchen. actually, just to fithis is sti a very fluid investigation. you have several police departments as well as the fbi and the atf involved in this investigation of who this individual is. now, one of the questions that the investigators are trying to determine right away is whether or not this professor, professor schmidt, was actually the target of this one individual this morning. they don t know if he was the target or if he was just a random v
soon as they can. hopefully gretchen somebody recognized this individual and then what the police will do is obviously go up to this guy s house, get a wafrnt and get as much as information about him as they possibly can. it s kind of a scary situation no matter how you look at it. even if he was holed up in a building on campus, which is what we originally thought, that would be scary in and of itself, possibly taking hostages, et cetera. now they re saying they don t believe he s on campus anymore. so how do you possibly do a search for this guy other than going to his house and trying to get more clues? i mean, mississippi, a big area to be looking in. that s right. well, that s a very good question. here s why. because the first thing the investigators have to do and i ve been involved in situations like this, we have to identify the shooter if we can right away. and how do we do that, gretchen? we do that by interviewing witnesses. hopefully somebody saw this guy. we don t kno
