we re here live at the white house, awaiting the arrival of general mcchrystal. history-making night. we ve got the rundown. in south carolina, rising republican star nikki haley easily defeated gresham barrett. she overcame allegations of marital infidelity, ethnic slurs from a state senator and is now the first woman in south carolina to win a major party s nomination for governor and is going to probably be the next governor. to our friends in the media, across this state and across this country who are analyzing what this victory means and what barriers this may have broken, i will tell you there might be some truth to that. but this is so much more than that. this is a movement that was about clear conservative ideas that just wasn t going to take
any distractions. you know, she did something that many people have tried to do in south carolina. she brought the sanfords back together. both governor mark sanford and jenny sanford are both haley supporters. mark sanford on monday took a vacation without informing his second in command. haley opponent gresham barrett joins kay bailey hutchison as incumbents in congress who have lost primaries for governor. he voted for the wall street bailout. speaking of the bailout vote. elsewhere in south carolina, another incumbent bites the dust. trey gowdy crushed representative bob ingliss. incumbent member of congress got 29% in a two-way there. ingliss is a six-term congressman. becomes the third house member to lose a primary this cycle. another history-making win in south carolina.
nikki haley won the republican gubernatorial nomination in south carolina last night. haley easily beat u.s. congressman gresham barrett in their runoff election. in other results, six-term republican u.s. congressman bob inglis became the fifth incumbent to lose this year. he lost to prosecutor trey gowdy, and tim scott is in line to become the first republican african-american congressman in south carolina in over a century when he beat the son of former segregationist strom thurmond. scott is a big favorite in the general, and if he wins, he ll be the republican party s first black lawmaker since j.c. watts retired seven years ago. hardball will be right back.
