US shakes up Yemen policy, but long road to peace

US shakes up Yemen policy, but long road to peace By AFP - Feb 07,2021 - Last updated at Feb 07,2021 Supporters of Yemen’s Houthi movement gesture as they chant slogans during a demonstration against the outgoing US administration’s decision to designate the Iran-backed rebels as terrorists, in the capital Sanaa on January 20 (AFP photo) RIYADH President Joe Biden has shaken up US policy on Yemen by ending support for Saudi-led offensive operations and de-listing the Huthi rebels as a terrorist group, but a swift end to the six-year conflict is highly unlikely. Biden’s decisions last week mark a reversal of policies by his predecessor Donald Trump, a staunch backer of Saudi Arabia and a fierce opponent of rebel supporter Iran.

Diplomacy to be a challenge as U S ends its support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen

Diplomacy to be a challenge as U.S. ends its support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen Sudarsan Raghavan and Missy Ryan, The Washington Post Feb. 5, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail CAIRO - In a single day this week, the United States involvement in Yemen s catastrophic six-year-long war was transformed. On Thursday, President Joe Biden ended support for a Saudi-led coalition s offensive operations in the conflict, pledged to use diplomacy to halt the fighting and named a highly regarded new special envoy to the country. Now comes the really hard part. Since 2015, when the U.S.-backed regional coalition headed by Saudi Arabia entered the war and propelled it into overdrive, Yemen has become the scene of a complex and intractable conflict that has killed tens of thousands and brought millions to the brink of starvation.
