Going to work its way in for the weekend. Well talk about that in a moment. In the North Carolina high country, its a different story, the snow up there will continue through the day. Eyewitness News Reporter dave faherty has been up in the high country and just blustery snowy conditions continue. Reporter you can probably see it on my lense right there. Its actually blowing sideways. Let me wipe it real quick so you can see me a little clearer out here. The snow started around 8 00 this morning in the North Carolina high country. This is the fifth day in a row school because of all of this snow that weve gotten in the North Carolina mountains. Take a look at some of this video. This is video i shot on the way up to Beach Mountain this morning. You can see the snow has been light so far. But its coating some of the elevations. The main roads like highway 321. Highway 105 are wet but in good shape in Beach Mountain, residents are reporting as much as 15 inches of snow thats fallen this

Has done a good job with the main roads. But when it comes with that wind, it gets covered again with temperatures so low there are some dangerous windchills at the higher elevations. Earlier i was out when a group of soldiers were stuck in 15 inches of snow. Theyre here skiing as part of a single soldiers retreat. Pretty cold and the weather has been awful. The weather is pretty bad. When youre not used to driving in it, it adds to it. Reporter i promise you i did set my camera down, went over to the back of that suv and started shoving it myself. After about a few pushes there, we were able to get it unstuck from that ditch. And i think theyre over at the ski resort skiing right now. The ski resorts looking very much forward to this weekend. If you look at the car, thats a sheet of ice up here in troutman. Thats the situation on the roads, the longer the time they have to ice over, the more of a danger certainly. Up on i77, we found wrecks all over the place between statesville and troutman. Its going to take a while for this to warm up and relieve the situation here. John ahrens, channel 9 Eyewitness News. All right thank you. Breaking news on i485 in huntersville. All outer loop lanes near i77 are closed after an eight vehicle crash. These are the first live pictures. Medic says the area is icy. Video from the 485 back up. People started telling me they thought it was an eight car pile up ahead. Chris waited patiently. A spokesperson told us heavy freezing rain kept the 40 contracted crews out treating roads busy. They were putting down salt to help break up the icy patches. The difficulty in that was when we had heavy rain move through, it could wash the salt off the roads. Jenkins admits it wasnt fun waiting in traffic but understands why Highway Patrol needed to make the call. I could have easily been one of those people. Once you hit ice, it doesnt are. Troopers told me they feared if they didnt shut down portions of these highways that someone would have been critically injured or even killed. Including some first responders.
