Over 30 People Gather to Protest JCC’s Decision to Have Cathy Young as Commencement Speaker
Over 30 people attended a protest held at
Jamestown Community College Friday night. The protest was over the decision by the college administration and board of trustees to have former State Senator
Cathy Young speak at commencement against the unanimous recommendation of the college’s
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force.
JCC Political Science Professor Dr.
Greg Rabb cited Young’s voting record which included voting against marriage equality and transgender rights, “Every step of the way, let me repeat that, she fought and voted against us every step of the way. She voted against marriage equality, endorsing discrimination against those of us who fall in love someone of the same gender and expecting legal protection of our rights. We won despite her.”

City Pursuing Establishing a Local Preservation Ordinance for Historic Structures
The City of Jamestown is pursuing establishing a Local Preservation Ordinance for historic structures in the City. City Principal Planner
Ellen Shadle gave a presentation to the
Jamestown Planning Commission about what a Local Preservation Ordinance, or LPO, would do including providing building stock with additional protections Federal protections do not address,
“An LPO expands the city’s toolbox in saving meaningful structures, having the ability to explore a range of options to unsightly or unsafe structures. The city is committed to striving for positive outcomes, from giving careful considerations to private property rights, concurrently with reviewing any individual’s actions on the community at large.”

The Jamestown Planning Commission is discussing mitigation proposals for a possible housing project in the city, again.
On Tuesday, the commission discussed the mitigation proposal submitted by Home Leasing, a family-owned, for-profit redevelopment company based in Rochester, for the possible renovation of the historic Arcade Building in downtown Jamestown.
In October, Bret Garwood, Home Leasing CEO, and Adam Driscoll, Home Leasing development manager, discussed the potential project to renovate the Arcade Building, located at 26-32 N. Main St., Jamestown, into an apartment complex with 36 units.
Garwood said they discovered the Arcade Building while working on the redevelopment project at the site where a building was destroyed by fire in 2017 along Main Street in Falconer.
