former president donald trump s request for a new trial with ejean request for a new trial with e jean carroll s award to her in damages. artists are warning their profession is at risk from artificial intelligence and that regulators around the world should speed up their efforts to tackle what they say is exploitation of their work. so called generative ai tools can create new artworks based on billions of other images scraped from the internet. many artists say their work has been fed into these tools without their consent, and without compensation. tomos morgan reports. i m an illustrator and concept artist. i work in a digital industry on projects like dungeons and dragons. the attention to detail in greg murkowski s work means that each piece can take him over
two weeks to complete. he s been honing his craft for over a decade, but in september last year, he began noticing that his name was being attributed to art that looked a lot like his but wasn t. my name was being used in al. generative imagery is so many times and i remember that after like one month i believe my name had been used like 90,000 times by now. greg believes his name has been linked to over 400,000 ai generated images. those generators are not really, you know, ethical. this is my work, you know, this is my identity. generative ai software can make something new from the billions of images online. it s combed from the internet, scraping and storing the data, creating something fresh from the archive it s collected. well, ai could have its use is in some aspects of artist s work, many are worried about the way their images are being taken and then reused
without their permission. we have to have representations of our work online. we have to put them on things like social media for us to be able to have careers, for us to be able to have people write about our work. there s still a copyright, though, on that work. consent, credit and compensation. these are really great principles that should be embodied in these companies as a framework. one possible solution for artists is a tool called glaze. to the human eye, there s little difference between an original image made by an artist and one that s been glazed. but when ai see a glazed image, it appears scrambled and distorted. the artists say the best protection, however, will be regulation and legal action which are ultimately needed and necessary long term. my work and my future is. is under the huge question mark, i would say. greg s dragons have been used in more ai than pablo picasso s or leonardo da vinci s work.
