Photo Credit: Getty Images A supply shortage of epoxy, polyester and vinyl ester resins, caused by U.S. winter storms and a variety of factors, continue to make headlines and affect the composites industry.  As reported by Gardner Intelligence chief economist Michael Guckes in his latest Composites Fabricating Index column, supply chain difficulties continue to restrict production, “which, in the face of strong demand, has caused a meteoric rise in backlog activity.” (See the latest Business Index columns here: compositesworld.com/hashtag/economics) In response to this data and other industry reports, CW, with Gardner Intelligence, recently surveyed 144 composites fabricators to learn more about what the industry is experiencing.

Northern Ireland at 100: Growing up in a land of dreams and terror

HOME. Although I’ve lived off and on in Scotland for the best part of 40 years now, that word still makes me think of a council house in Coleraine in County Londonderry. Three bedrooms, two sisters, Radio 1, Spacehoppers and football on the green. An eternal 1970s of the mind. Like WB Yeats, “I am of Ireland.” But the northern bit. I am Northern Irish or so I consider myself even though I’m not sure what I mean by that particularly. In my head the term triggers a reel of fuzzy images: family, friends, the Giant’s Causeway, Mary Peters, Georgie Best, Gerry Armstrong scoring against Spain, the Undertones, Dana, Kenneth Branagh in the days he still had an Ulster accent, Barry McGuigan and Tayto crisps (the ones from Tandragee not the ones from County Meath)

Undocumented must share in NJ’s COVID stimulus, jobless aid | Letters Posted Apr 28, 2021 Facebook Share Undocumented workers organized by Make the Road New Jersey are in the third week of their hunger strike that demands financial stimulus relief for immigrant workers like themselves. My organization, Partners for Women and Justice, calls on Gov. Phil Murphy to take action now to ensure that ALL New Jersey families can recover from COVID-19 economic fallout. COVID-19 has unleashed a shadow pandemic of domestic violence and has devastated low-income immigrant survivors. Unemployment, COVID infections and deaths, insecure housing, and hunger have especially harmed these families and escalated violence for those in abusive relationships. The disqualification of immigrants from stimulus funds and unemployment benefits has limited victims’ opportunities to leave.

How watchtower observers keep NJ wildfires in check

New Jersey Herald Perched at the top of a 45-foot steel tower, high above the trees in the middle of the Kittatinny Ridge in northern Sussex County, is a small cube with walls of glass. In that cube, with binoculars pressed to his eyes, Nick Valerio can see for miles and miles around him. He, just like the fire watch observers in the other 20 watchtowers throughout New Jersey, is on the lookout for the telltale plumes of smoke from wildfires. It s a very, very important job up here in the tower, Valerio said as he looked around. It s dispatching, accountability . it s knowing who s going to a fire, who s at the fire, he said of his responsibilities.
