Santee riverbed fire being investigated as possible arson

SANTEE    Authorities investigating a fire in the Santee riverbed Friday as a possible arson after someone saw a person with a gas can leaving the area, the Sheriff’s Department said. The fire was reported just before 11:30 a.m. south of Mast Park, Sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Hampton of the department’s bomb/arson unit said in a news release. The unit has taken over the investigation. The riverbed runs under the bridge along Carlton Hills Boulevard north of Mission Gorge Road. Deputies evacuated the park as firefighters used water drops and ground crews to fight the blaze. Battalion Chief Aaron Bagley from the Santee Fire Department told OnScene TV that crews were able to keep the fire to about a quarter-acre. He also said there is an encampment in the area.

Spring Valley marijuana dispensary targeted by arsonist

SPRING VALLEY    An arsonist tried to burn down a Spring Valley cannabis dispensary early Thursday, the latest in a string of incidents at illegal marijuana shops in the East County community, including a fatal shooting. The fire was reported around 6:25 a.m. at the dispensary on Troy Avenue near Sweetwater Road. The business advertises itself online as the Cookie Club Collective. The initial call reported that the roof of the building was on fire. When firefighters arrived, they found several items on fire in the alley behind the business and evidence of a “suspicious device,” said San Miguel Fire-Rescue Battalion Chief Justin Fuller. He said the “debris fire” was contained to the alley and did not cause any damage to the building.
