Previewing UAlbany s Spring Opener

I watched the UAlbany football team practice on Wednesday, and couldn’t help but notice how much bigger and faster the team looked to me. Head Coach Greg Gattuso has done a great recruiting CAA caliber players, and we will find out how good they are on Friday when they open the season at New Hampshire. One big plus is Redshirt Sophomore quarterback Jeff Undercuffler already has plenty of experience under his belt, and the defense returns a number of starters from the 2019 season when they went 6-2 and won their first-ever FCS Playoff game. In the above segment from Big Board Sports, Eric Hannmann and I discuss the spring opener for the Great Danes and the storylines going into the game. Here are some of the points that we touched upon:

Big Week for UAlbany Athletics

Big Week for UAlbany Athletics UAlbany men’s basketball team has enough talent and enough pieces to the puzzle to win the America East Conference tournament, which starts on Saturday in Hartford against NJIT. Head coach Will Brown with three grad students, has as much if not more experience on the floor then any team in the conference. It’s not a deep bench, so they can have no setbacks. But, overall talent, UA takes a backseat to no one. They swept NJIT in the abbreviated regular season, and that’s where their run to the NCAA tournament begins. As for UAlbany football, Greg Gattuso is ready to go with his program on this shortened spring season. Listen to why this isn t just an abbreviated season for Coach and how he elevates his offense and defense below!

New York Athletes Harder To Recruit During Pandemic

The University of Albany Football team is waiting for a Spring 2021 kickoff to a delayed 2020 season but Early Signing Day still happens. The Great Danes added 10 signees on Early Signing Day and even though it s a class full of Team Captains and impressive players there s only one New Yorker. Coach Greg Gattuso shared the challenges facing teams recruiting high school athletes during this COVID-19 pandemic. You know I think it did hurt a lot of our kids in state this year. Coach Gattuso said Everyone is going to have scholarships available in the spring. It’s been a challenge. There have been no camps and we haven’t seen the kids we haven’t spent time with them which is tough. A lot of our recruiting has gone off of last year‘s tape which usually isn’t good enough. The one thing about this year is that a lot of these kids that we signed a really high up on our list when we first started and you don’t always get to pick from those guys in a normal recruiting cycle.
