into this. so that s not an exact number. it s not at a certain time it day dies. a battery lasts so long, my understanding is and greg can explain it better, it s sending out about one signal every second. it s very low frequency. and from what i understand, the actual ability of that frequency to travel in the water is limited to two or three miles? it all depends on temperature. it all depends on how that box is sitting on the bottom of the motion. because if the box is turned so that the top of the box is upside down, it could be buries in the mud and attenuate the signal, you won t hear it at all. if it s clustered in a bunch of wreckage, it will attear it at all. so clock is really ticking.
flight that we have been searching for for well over a week now. i want to bring in greg fife. greg, you have been listening to this news conference from john young, the australia maritime safety administration. what does this information tell you? i think when we think about this, we have to have some optimistic caution. the fact that we ve been through this exercise once before with satellite photographs of what we thought was wreckage turned out to be nothing. i think we have to be very careful fcare ful. but it does prebtsent a scenari where you would expect to be finding parts of the airplane at that range out there only because that s where the airplane would have run out of
and then we got the ping that said the air kraft was airborne for six hours. now you have to calculate how far will that airplane trafl given its nor mall cruise speed. the f.a.a. and it really was the f.a.a. and boeing who sat down and looked at the aircraft performance based on fuel load and what a cruise performance-type air speed would be and they determined where fuel exhaustion would have taken place. and it happens to be where they put that new search section. greg, appreciate you joining is. we ve been talking about this all night long since we got the information from australiament we re going to continue to follow this and bring you the latest. you re watching breaking news on msnbc. msnbc.
