march 4th, circumstance that on your calendar, ladies and gentlemen, that is the one to look at. all fun and games until big bird gets hurt. luke russert on capitol hill. so now to a story out of texas where a death at a local county jail is raising questions about just how mentally ill people are treated when they are taken into custody. now one jail in greg county, there have been nine deaths since 2005. the most recent, lynn cali who suffered from bipolar disorder but denied medication by officials. her family is insisting when she began having seizures someone should have stepped in to help her. police trained to deal with mental illness when confronted should have reacted better. brandy investigated the story and joins us now. what happened, not an isolated incident. nine people have died, in custody, since 2005.
what the jail officials and the doctor at the jail say is that they did provide medical care to amy lynn coulding. they say her death wasn t their fault. it s unclear what medications she did receive in total there. we do know when she started having seizures and nurses reported she was aekticted out injected hermann with hal halidol. the 29th of december is when jailers found her dead in her cell. when we talk about her death, this was the ninth at a gregg county jail since 2005, isn t that a high number. well, it is compared to other jails of its size. the gregg county jail has more than 900 beds in its facility. when i looks at other facilities of other similar size across the state of texas they reported usually more like two and four
deaths. so nine was an unusually high number. also, when we through your reporting, gregg county reported to have a high staff turnover rate. were you able to pinpoint why that is? well what we found that is, over the last each of the last two years, about 40% of the staff at that jail was either terminated or turned in their resignation. the sheriff says, you flow, the pay is low. it s hard to find qualified staff in that rural area of the state and they work under stressful conditions. he tries to provide training that goes above and beyond the state standards that are set for jailer but was some question that high turnover rate and wonder if, you know, the staff there is adequately experienced to take care of some of these really complex situations that arise, such as what happened with miss calling. most of us would need to walk a mile in their shoes to figure out what it s like to work there. we understand there are harsh
