Design in 2021 – what will design activism look like? January 15, 2021 8:59 am

“Deeds not Words”. With this motto, the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) was created in 1903. Founded by Emmeline Pankhurst, the aim of the organisation was to secure the right to vote for women in the United Kingdom – by any means.
If 2020 was the year of the marginalized making their voices heard, 2021 will be the year those voices create action – deeds, not words. Since the murder of George Floyd last year in the US, we’ve seen creative and innovative efforts to raise awareness, further discussion, and highlight inequality on a global scale.

As the world went into lockdown in March, many people faced a situation like no other. “I’ve been feeling pretty helpless watching the news,” Becky Wass wrote on Facebook. “I wanted to do something about it, so I’ve made a postcard that I’ll be posting to my older neighbours as this progresses.”
The postcard was a simple piece of graphic design – asking people if they needed help picking up shopping, posting mail or if they simply wanted a friend phone call. “If just one person feels less lonely or isolated when aced with his pandemic, then I’ll feel better about it,” Wass added.
