PORTSMOUTH - Rain or shine, helping hands are needed for the return of Operation Blessing’s “One Day to Serve” event next month.
Cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, One Day to Serve tasks community members with cleaning and beautifying Portsmouth Housing Authority properties.
Operation Blessing Executive Director Tammy Josyln said that this year’s event, taking place on Saturday, May 22, will be the 13th in its history.
“It’s been really cool to watch it evolve the way it has,” she said.
All 10 PHA properties, along with the Betty’s Dream Foundation on Longmeadow Lane, will have a team of volunteers working on their property. With all equipment provided by the PHA and Operation Blessing, volunteers will be charged with raking, picking up trash, spreading mulch and loam, painting and washing windows, among other needed services.
PORTSMOUTH Besides learning to perfect an ollie back when he was in second grade, Portsmouth resident Seamus Durkin didn’t spend a whole lot of time skateboarding growing up.
When the pandemic struck, though, things changed: Along with a friend, Sebastian Borden, Durkin, now a senior at Portsmouth High School, took up the hobby again and has been skateboarding every chance he gets.
More than just a physical activity for Durkin, skateboarding gives him a sense of calm as people around the world continue grappling with the coronavirus. “I think it really means a lot,” he said of his newfound passion.
Great Christmas Giveaway a blessing for Seacoast families in need
PORTSMOUTH – Wearing a mask and rubber gloves as she picked through potential Christmas gifts for her six children, Alli Morris said, I m so beyond broke it s not even funny.
One of her sons loves anything Pokemon. For another, she chose a small Nerf gun. For one of her daughters, a frilly pink pillow.
The toys filling three trash bags that Morris ultimately left with were free – as are all items at the Great Christmas Giveaway, run by Portsmouth-based nonprofit Operation Blessing. It s an annual event where low-income families can shop for their children at no cost inside the Greenleaf Recreation Center, adorned to look like Santa Claus workshop.
