Global Warming: Green Sahara, Forest Action to Reforest Plateau, Others

Seriki Adinoyi Green Sahara Farms Limited based in Jos, Plateau State, in collaboration with an international partner, Forest Action based in France, is set to reforest the state and other North-central states by planting 25 million trees. Disclosing this in Jos during a stakeholders’ meeting, the General Manager of Green Sahara, Mr. Rayandy Chuwang, said the meeting was part of advocacy and sensitisation ahead of the reforestation so as to bring out the grey areas as well as the productive nature of the scheme. Chuwang said the project would begin in July this year, and it’s expected to last for two years, during which a total of 250,000 trees of different species will be integrated.

Best from science journals: When the Sahara was green

Fossil plant study About 14,500 to 5,000 years ago, North Africa was green with vegetation and the period is known as the Green Sahara or African Humid Period. Until now, researchers have assumed that the rain was brought by an enhanced summer monsoon. Now, a study of pollen and leaf waxes extracted from sediments have shown that there were two monsoon systems. We have winter rain on the northern margin of the Sahara, the monsoon on the southern margin, and between the two areas an overlap of the two rain systems which provides rains there during both summer and winter, albeit rather sparsely, explains first author Rachid Cheddadi in a release.

Using fossil plant molecules to track down the Green Sahara

Researchers have developed a new concept to explain the phenomenon known as Green Sahara. They demonstrate that a permanent vegetation cover in the Sahara was only possible under two overlapping rainy seasons. Dr. Enno Schefuß of MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences of the University of Bremen, Dr. Rachid Cheddadi of the University of Montpellier, and their colleagues have now published their study in the journal PNAS.
