MANSFIELD – The town’s trash and recycling program does not require any major alterations including changing to a pay-as-you-throw system, according to the Trash and Recycling Task Force Ad Hoc Committee.
“We did consider all the other options like pay-as-you-throw,” said Select Board Chairman Neil Rhein, a task force member. “Most residents like the system we have.”
The task force recently completed a study of the town’s program in preparation for the end of the current contract with Waste Management in June 2022. The town’s contract with Wheelabrator Millbury, Inc., which accepts the town’s trash at its waste-to-energy plant, also expires in Dec. 31, 2027. Town officials have expressed concern with recent market changes impact on the cost of trash disposal particularly with a new contract needed.
