How to recycle properly in Michigan

How to recycle properly in Michigan About 20%-40% of recycled items shouldn’t be recycled Updated:  Tags:  We only have one Earth, so we only have one chance to do it right. This Earth Day, we’re focusing on one of the best ways to reduce waste and help the environment: recycling. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to recycle the right way, and so a significant portion of recycled items don’t even end up getting recycled at all. Data shows that, depending on the community, about 20-40 percent of recycled items received by sorting facilities can’t actually be recycled. Joe Munem with Green For Life in New Boston says that some of these items are extreme like the deer carcass he saw recycled once but most items that aren’t recyclable are sent by people with good intentions who just don’t know better.

Litter wars: state and local leaders are preparing for the fight

Sun Journal North Carolina’s highways are facing a growing problem of litter-overload with papers and packaging piling up everywhere you go. It has seemingly reached a saturation point as county and state leaders are admitting embarrassment at how visitors to the state must see us, and action is beginning to happen to fight the problem. The littering comes from numerous sources: people simply throwing their trash out the window as they drive along is the best known – and probably the hardest to catch. You see their signature everywhere – at butt-strewn intersections where they just finished off that last cigarette; at exit ramps and the last dozen yards before bridges where passengers and drivers seem to get a sudden urge to lose that trash before going on.

Air quality monitor at Northville school now operational

At first glance, the recently-erected mechanism that sits just east of Northville Township s Ridge Wood Elementary School looks like something that just escaped from a futuristic science lab. The device decked out with appendages you might find on the Mars rover is actually a hydrogen sulfide air-monitoring station that was placed near the school by Green For Life (GFL), the new owner of the Arbor Hills Landfill located in Salem Townsihp, less than a mile west of Ridge Wood. The placement of the station is part of an agreement between Advanced Disposal Services (the former owner of the landfill) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency and in accordance with an access agreement with Northville Public Schools to help settle compliance violations the landfill s owners have committed over the past several years.
