Frozen food boom for convenience stores Print

Three-quarters (74%) of convenience retailers have seen demand for frozen food grow this year, with 42% saying frozen grew more than any other category, according to a new survey from Birds Eye.
More than one-third of stores have expanded their freezer space to meet this demand, with ready meals and meal accompaniments seeing the biggest increases.
The survey of 200 independent retailers, undertaken in partnership with analysts at KAM Media, highlights how demand for frozen food has exploded since lockdown in March.
Chris West, channel controller at Birds Eye, said: “The lockdown period has served as a way to emphasise the role that independent retailers play in supporting society, as well as demonstrating that the frozen food category poses a real, long-term opportunity for them to expand their shoppers’ repertoire, amplified further by the growth of home deliveries.”
