Indeed, that’s exactly what happened. Across broad sections of the Canadian auto market, sales were wildly more numerous than at this point a year ago. At General Motors, for example, which is currently Canada’s top-selling automaker, Q1 volume jumped 30 percent. Hyundai and Kia combined for a 23-percent surge. Some premium brands posted wild gains: Porsche was up 84 percent and Volvo shot up 57 percent.
Individual nameplates as varied as the GMC Canyon, Acura MDX, and Chrysler Pacifica all more than doubled their sales. Mazda’s MX-5 Miata boasts of a
near-five-times increase. Lexus reported five sales of the LC coupe in 2020’s first three months 36 this year. There are a wide variety of other similar stories of rapid sales expansion.
