AIR DEFENSE: Greek Patriots Head To Saudi Arabia
May 14, 2021: In April 2021 Greece signed an agreement to send one of its six Patriot Air Defense batteries to Saudi Arabia. Forty Greek troops with Patriot experience will accompany the Greek battery and the Saudis will supply the rest of the hundred troops required to operate the battery. The Saudis requested the Patriot battery in 2019 and Greece initially agreed, but delayed sending the Patriot battery because their eastern neighbor, Turkey, suddenly became more of a threat. In early 2020 Turkey claimed control of waters off the Greek coast that international agreements recognize as Greek and may contain large natural gas deposits. Turkey and Greece and are both NATO members none of them sided with Turkey. This is not the first time Turkey and Greece have had territorial disputes but this is the first time the Turks invaded a North African country in order to establish they false claim.

ATHENS, April 14 (Reuters) - Greece is expected to finalise a deal with Saudi Arabia for the deployment of a Greek Patriot anti-aircraft system next week, two government officials in Athens said on Wednesday.
Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and Defence Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos are due to travel to Riyadh next week to sign the agreement, one of the officials with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
Greece will lend a battery of the U.S.-made Patriot anti-aircraft system to the kingdom to protect critical energy facilities, another official said on condition of anonymity.
Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement, which is battling a Saudi-led coalition that intervened in the country’s war in 2015, has stepped up drone and missile attacks on Saudi targets in recent weeks.

ATHENS - Diplomacy failing to stop Turkish provocations and plans to hunt for energy off Greek islands, the New Democracy government is reaching out to broaden international alliances in North Africa, the Middle East and Gulf region.
Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and Defense Minister Nikos Panagiotopoulos went to Saudi Arabia to sign an agreement for the transfer there of Greek Patriot anti-aircraft missiles and the stationing of 100-120 Hellenic Air Force personnel, said Kathimerini.
Dendias pointed out that the transfer of the Patriots to Saudi Arabia is “our contribution to the wider security of the energy sources of the West” and stressed that “Greek foreign policy, which has the main goal of connecting the country with the Gulf countries, has taken another step forward.”
