In 1953, in the midst of the silent rustle and the absolute quiet that accompanied Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in Westminster Abbey, Prince Philip Mountbatten, 31-year-old Duke of Edinburgh, raised his crown and knelt before the feet of the young queen whom he had married six years earlier. And I swear an oath of royal allegiance: “I swear, I Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, that I will be a man loyal to the Queen, with my life, and with all my souls, and to perform earthly worship … May the Almighty Lord help me.”
Duke Philip preserved this oath for the next 68 years, which made him a miracle of miracles, not only for the British monarchy, but according to the well-known standards of modern marriage as well.
