A “blessing box” is coming to the South Wheeling neighborhood this week.
Blessing boxes are outdoor storage closets filled with free food items and hygiene products for those who need them, and the public is encouraged to bring and donate items to the box for its continued use.
The South Wheeling box is the seventh of its kind to be placed in the Wheeling area. It will be opened to the public at 3:15 p.m. Thursday and located outside the Elks Lodge at 4706 Jacob St.
The blessing boxes are provided by the Ohio County Family Resource Network and the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling, who partner with local organizations that commit to routine monitoring and stocking of the boxes.
For The Times Leader
WHEELING The Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling will host its first fundraiser in more than a year next week, as it faces the continuing need to feed the hungry.
The soup kitchen’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Potato Soup Sale is set to happen from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17.
The soup sale in March didn’t take place in 2020, and neither did the winter soup sale.
Executive Director Becky Shilling-Rodocker said delivery is available for larger orders, while curbside pick-up will be the mode for smaller ones.
“You don’t have to worry about parking. You don’t have to worry about coming into the building,” she said. “It will be in a bag and ready to go.”

Eight local charities received $300 donations each from the Ohio Valley Street Survivors Car Club over the holiday season, despite cancellations of a number of the club’s events in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Donation recipients included Grow Warwood Pride, Bridgeport Christian Fellowship Food, Bethlehem Apostolic Temple, Catholic Charities, Wheeling Area Training Center for the Handicapped (WATCH), Winter Freeze Shelter, The Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling and the Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center in Wheeling. Due to the pandemic, club officers were unable to meet with the representatives of each organization as they have in recent years and the donations were mailed to each agency.
