Elizabeth Wolford made history in this region when she was appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the United States Senate in 2013 as the first woman to serve as district judge in the Western District of New York.
And now Wolford, 54, is again blazing a trail as she is set to become the chief judge of the district, which includes the state s 17 westernmost counties. She will become the first woman to serve in this role in any part of the state outside of New York City.
Wolford replaces U.S. District Judge Frank P. Geraci Jr., who was also appointed by Obama in 2013 and has served as chief judge since 2015. She will remain in the position for seven years.

The Greater Rochester Association of REALTORS has confirmed what many seeking a home already know it s a competitive seller s market.
The group on Friday released First Quarter figures. While home inventory in Monroe County is about half of what was available on the market one year ago, those homes are selling for a higher price. Currently the median sales price of a home in Monroe County is $168,000, which is roughly 12% higher than the price at this time last year.
In Ontario County, home inventory is down by 43% as the median sales price rose 14.5% to $190,000 since March 2020.
